The World's Most Dangerous Jobs : Risk and Reward

October 10, 2024

Some individuals brave perilous conditions daily in the pursuit of a livelihood. From precarious heights to deep-sea depths, certain occupations have inherent risks that can mean life or death. While many jobs offer stability and security, others demand a level of courage and resilience few possess.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the top 10 hazardous occupations are Logging, Fishing, Aircraft Pilots, Roofers, Steel Workers, Trash Collectors, Miners, Agricultural Workers, Truck Drivers, and Electrical Linemen.

Security experts consider real estate to be a high-risk profession. Real estate agents face a higher rate of violent crime than many other occupations.

Hazardous jobs require safety equipment. While the toolbox may be different for each occupation, there are ways that agents can protect themselves. Here are a few things you can expect your agent to do or ask when you first meet.

Meet at the office to get to know you and collect personal information for your files.
Complete a customer identification form. The form asks for the car make and license number, contact information, and employer information. It’s company policy that all clients’ driver’s licenses are photocopied.
Meet a coworker. Criminals won’t like that others have seen them for identification purposes.

One more thing to be aware of is this: When you hire an agent and they ask someone to accompany them to the first appointment, it is in the agent’s best interest to be accompanied by a partner. It could be a colleague, a significant other, or a spouse. It doesn’t mean the agent is not competent on their own; it just means the agent is a conscientious professional who puts safety first.

Real estate professionals put themselves at risk every day. Meeting new clients, showing properties, letting strangers get into their car, and even marketing may be jeopardizing their personal safety. When agents ask for your identification, understand that they don’t really know who you are, and they are wise to treat every new acquaintance equally. It is in their best interest to take precautionary, protective measures.
