Household Fires - Uncommon Causes
October 23, 2025

We are all aware of the most common causes of house fires, which are cooking, heating equipment, electrical malfunction, and smoking materials. But did you know there are many other often overlooked dangers?
Less common causes include dryer lint buildup, bird nests near heat sources, issues with lithium-ion batteries, and placing flammable items too close to heat sources. These are all preventable with a bit of diligence.
Empty the lint trap each time you use your dryer to prevent buildup. If possible, move your dryer closer to an exterior wall; if your vent pipe is particularly long or has to snake around corners, you’re at a greater risk of a clog. A key indicator that your dryer vent needs cleaning is if clothes aren’t drying as fast as they usually do.
Bird nests can cause house fires, primarily by creating fire hazards in places like dryer vents, chimneys, and near electrical equipment. The flammable materials in nests, combined with heat from appliances or sparks from fireplaces, can easily ignite. Nests also block airflow in vents, forcing appliances to work harder and overheat.
Ceiling fans can cause house fires, primarily due to faulty wiring, overheating from worn-out motors, or installation errors. When a fan’s motor can’t turn freely, it draws more current, which can cause the motor to overheat and ignite nearby materials, or a short circuit can spark a fire. Overheating and fire risks are especially common in exhaust fans where lint and dust can build up.
Closet lights in some smaller or older homes consist of a single incandescent light bulb. These bulbs give off more heat than most people realize. Closets are filled with flammable objects; if the bulb remains on for a while, the heat could start a fire. To avoid this, swap out the incandescent bulb with an LED energy-efficient one.
October is National Fire Prevention Month, so take the time to review your home safety plan, test smoke detectors, and replace batteries. You should also have a fire extinguisher on each floor of your home.
